Sewing endeavors I'm going to start come February

The sewing world seems (I tried to type "seams" first... ah, sewing puns...) all atwitter with plans for the new year and wonderful sew-alongs. Gertie's Crêpe, Cupcake Goddess's Trousers, Peter's Negroni, Casey's Swing Dress... Not to mention the challenges that have popped up. I'm still travelling and will be for the next week, and then I'm visiting my parents for a 55th birthday party, but come February I have lots of plans myself!

My sewing year 2010 started late and was cut a little short, so I didn't actually have a list of plans for the year, but with everybody's reviews and resolutions that I've only just caught up with, I can think of a few things I'd like to manage during 2011.

1. Taking more time and an eye for the detail with my garments. In other words, keeping quick&dirty to a minimum, finishing and pressing all my seams, probably learning a few new techniques, making my first muslin...

2. Spring cleaning! In other words, cleaning up my wardrobe, only keeping the garments I really love and wear, getting some order into my fabrics and notions and making a list of garments I'd like to make this year, which brings me to...

3. Making a Wardrobe Capsule. I've seen a few of these around, most notably at Ali's and Sarah's blog, and they seem like a wonderful way to stay focused on and find out a bit more about my style. Which should hopefully make it easier to...

4. Begin creating a balanced wardrobe of handmade garments I love to wear and RTW garment I already have and love or which I can't make myself. Also, since I've spent quite a bit of my pocket money the last few months on new fabrics, I'd like to...

5. Make at least every second garment from existing fabric.

Those are the "big sewing goals" for now, although there are quite a few little ones I've already planned on, like joining a couple of the challenges and sew-alongs (more about that when I'm back home), being a bit more active in the blogging world (both here and in commenting on other's blogs instead of lurking, like I usually do), joining Me-Made-March (if there is going to be one this year)...

I'm also planning on making a bit of jewellery and accessoirs, getting together some friends and taking our old stuff, handmade stuff and ill-fitting-but-still-good clothing to the flea markets. Should be fun!

So, Happy Sewing everyone, and greetings from (at the moment) Hong Kong!

PS: By now, this post is actually several days old, because Blogger has been giving me a bit of a hard time and didn't want to post this. No matter, it seems to be working now...

  2. Wow, great new year goals, and I look forward to seeing your capsules and your fabulous finished objects! :) Also, so jealous that you're in Hong Kong, I'd recognize that view from Kowloon anywhere. A dear friend lives there in Central and I still have the coaster of one of her fave eateries, the Peak Cafe, on my fridge. I liked Stanley too. Enjoy!!

  4. Thanks! Actually, I only had one-and-a-half days in Hong Kong, a kind of an extended layover... but it was fun! Such a bustling city! Tonight is my last night in Phuket, Thailand and tomorrow I'll start my way home...
